What do you need to know to fly your Commercial drone?

That’s the question we pose to Brian Wynne, President and CEo of the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International. AAUVSI is the world’s largest nonprofit organization dedicated to the advancement of unmanned systems and robotics. It represents more than 7,000 members from more than 60 countries involved in the fields of government, industry and academia. Prior to joining AUVSI in January 2015, he was president and CEO of the Electric Drive Transportation Association (EDTA). Is there a right way to view whales and other marine life with a drone?

Today’s guest believes there is, and she’s making it her mission to spread the word.  Alicia Amerson is a marine biologist, drone pilot and instructor, and marine conservation and policy consultant. She is also the founder of AliMoSphere, a start-up company dedicated to protecting our ocean heritage with science, partnerships and technology.

In this edition of the Drone Radio Show, Alicia talks about efforts to educate pilots on how best to fly drones so as not to disturb or cause harm to natural wildlife. She also talks about the beneficial applications of drones in studying or collecting data on marine mammals. And she’ll talk about the highest cause of mortality for biologists in the field and how drones can reduce that risks.

Can A Drone Design A Better Pool?

Perhaps not just yet, but according to today's guest, they definitely speed up the process and save a lot of time and money.  Jim Wolfe is a pool designer from Chesterfield, Missouri. His company, Azpoolz, is a premium pool and spa design concept studio. He designs hundreds of pools every year. In 2017, Jim began using a drone to streamline the process of creating 3D models of his pool designs. By contracting with on-line drone pilot platforms, like drones.io and upsonder.com, Jim was able to extend in drone design services nationwide. What will the skies look like in 2050?

For that question, we turn to Michael Read, founder of SkyBase.aero, a full, end-to-end drone services company in Christchurch, New Zealand. Michael holds a Bachelor of Science, an Airline Transport Pilot’s Licence, is an associate member of the New Zeland Institute of Mangement and is an Upper Freeman in the Honorable Company of Air Pilots. He has extensive experience in aviation, start-up business expertise, testing and evaluation, a  nd experience with Full Flight simulators. Michael will be speaking at the 2017 Commercial UAV Show in London on “What the skies will look like in 2050?” In this edition of the Drone Radio Show, Mike will give us some insights into the future and what we might expect to see in the next 35 years.

Are you up to date with the proposed FAA rulemaking and potential legislation on drones?

Don’t worry, because today’s guest is going to give us the details.  Diana Marina Cooper is the Senior Vice President of Policy & Strategy at PrecisionHawk, a commercial drone and data services company. Prior to joining PrecisionHawk, Diana developed and led the UAS and Robotics Practice Group at the law firm of LaBarge Weinstein.  Diana is the President of the Small UAV Coalition, an organization that represents leading technology companies engaged in UAS. She serves on the Advisory Board of the Energy Drone Coalition, the Advocacy Committee of AUVSI, and the Board of Unmanned Systems Canada. Diana is also a member of the FAA Drone Advisory Subcommittee.  Diana has testified before Senate Commerce and has briefed the House UAS Caucus on drone policy and regulations. She is one of the most knowledgeable people when it comes to UAS policy.  On this edition of the Drone Radio Show, Diana talks about Precision Hawk and their efforts to advance Beyond Visual Line of Flight, the Small UAV Coalition, the Remote ID ARC and she’ll give us an update on the status of proposed federal UAS Rulemaking.

How are drones used in the construction industry?

That’s the question that we explore in today’s show.  Chris Anderson is the CEO of 3D Robotics, founder and chairman of the Linux Foundation's Dronecode Project, and founder of the DIY Drones and DIY Robocars communities. From 2001 through 2012, Chris was the Editor in Chief of Wired Magazine. Before Wired he was with The Economist for seven years in London, Hong Kong and New York. He has led 3DR from a start-up, to drone manufacturer and now to drone services company. That’s the question that we explore in today’s show.  Paul Wheeler is part of the Technology Advancement Team at the Utah Dept. of Transportation. There he has served in many roles, including the Lead UAS Coordinator, survey technology advisor, lead of the 3D visualization group, Cadd support specialist, and construction surveyor. He is an instrument rated private pilot and has helped multiple flight schools develop interactive training for their programs and is working to fully implement the UAS program within the Utah Department of Transportation. Have you ever wondered what goes into training first responders on using drones?

Today's guest on the Drone Radio Show has been designing such programs for some time now, and he has some great insights. Ever wonder if we’re getting closer to integrating drones into the National Airspace?

Gryphon develops commercial sensor systems for the safe integration of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) into the National Airspace System (NAS).
