What do you get when you combined a 5-star resort with a drone?

If you ask  today’s guest on the Drone Radio Show, he’d say you get an incredible vacation experience and an opportunity to explore a new technology.  Bill Chen works at DJI’s central office in China in the business development and channel marketing section. There he’s charged with setting up new ways in which the company’s products can be experienced. In 2016, DJI formed a partnership with Marriott Resorts to allow guests to learn how to fly a drone. In this episode, Bill talks about DJI, the partnership with Marriott, and how the Drone Experience Program works.

For that question, we turn to Colin Snow, CEO and founder of Skylogic Research a research, content and advisory services firm in Redwood City, California.  Skylogic helps companies make critical investments by providing research-based insights on commercial drone markets. This is the second in a podcast series where those who cover the drone industry share their perspectives on the key stories, people and events that shape the that industry.  In Volume 2 of "Stories of the Drone," we hear from Sally French reporter with Market Watch and a drone enthusiast.  Sally is also known as The Drone Girl and writes her own blog under that name.  She's been covering the drone industry for four years.  In this episode, she talks about some of the stories from 2016 and what we might expect to see ini 2017.  We had a great conversation about drones, technology, events and even learned a few new things about Sally herself.

Manav Gupta is serial entrepreneur based in Hong Kong, China.  He is founder and CEO of Brinc, an ultra hands-on accelerator offering a comprehensive program to very early stage start-up companies and nurturing them to business launch.  On this episode of the Drone Radio Show, Manav talks about Brinc’s newest venture – the Reimagine Drone Accelerator, a dedicated drone services incubator in Barcelona.  The program will provide startups with financial and technical support to develop new and disruptive drone-based technologies. Brinc and their European partner, Incubio, are looking for passionate founders who are creating a new generation of services and applications for the commercial drone industry.

What are some of the current legal issues facing drone operators today?

That is the central question posed to today’s guest on the Drone Radio Show.  Steve Hogan is an attorney at Ausley & McMullen, focusing on commercial drone law since 2012.  The firm specializes in assisting clients in obtaining waivers for drone operations.  Steve is the host of Drone Law Today, a weekly podcast that addresses current developments and future trends in "drone law." He is the also author of The Drone Revolution: How Robotic Aviation Will Change the World.  On this edition of the Drone Radio Show, Steve talks about current legal issues in the drone industry, why some operators may not want to toss out their Section 333 exemption, privacy and air space concerns, and state and local regulations.

What’s the next generation of UAV solutions look like?

Have you wondered what role Cities have in advancing the drone industry?

If you ask that question of today’s guest on the Drone Radio Show, she would say, cities will play a critical role in promoting innovation and public safety.

Nicole DuPuis is a Senior Associate at the National League of Cities, a Washington, D.C. based organization dedicated to helping city leaders build better communities. Working in partnership with the 49 state municipal leagues, NLC serves as a resource to and an advocate for the more than 19,000 cities, villages and towns it represents.

Recently, the NLC released a report for its members on drones, aptly titled, “Cities and Drones – What Cities Need To Know About Unmanned Aerial Vehicles”.  With Part 107 now in effect and the drone industry poised to expand, communities are sure to see a rise in drone use, and potentially new concerns over safety and privacy.  Cities and Drones is a primer on drones for local officials, providing insight into the Part 107, as well as offering suggestions for how local governments can craft drone ordinances to encourage innovation while also protecting their cities.

Nicole is the principle author of the report and in this episode of the Drone Radio Show, she talks about its findings and recommendations and how cities and members of the drone industry can work together to craft sensible solutions that provide benefit to all.

Can drones be used to save endangered wildlife from poachers?

If you asked that question of today’s guest, he’d say, it’s already happening. John Petersen is an aviator, author, professional futurist and chairman of the Charles A. and Anne Morrow Lindbergh Foundation. At the Lindbergh Foundation, he led the launch of their Air Shepherd Initiative, which funds and helps to deploy drones across southern Africa to combat acute poaching of rhinos and elephants. As we’ll hear today from John, in the past few years, more than 100,000 elephants have been killed by poachers, and drones represent the most efficient tool to deter this practice.

Steven Smith is President of Ultravance Corporation, a company that works with select UAS manufacturers and end-users helping them land new customers.
